Though natural hair breakage is a thing it can be prevented when you take the proper precautions. But what exactly is hair breakage, it is when the hair shaft gets damaged or dry and begins to break down the fabrication of your hair. This can look like split ends and or hair breaking off. But the damage is a thing of the past when you keep these tips in mind.
Keep hair moisturized
The foundation of keeping and maintaining moisture in your hair is knowing your hair's porosity. Hair porosity is your hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture. Once you know how your hair takes to moisture, decide what kind of products you want to work into your regimen keeping in mind the type of hair you have also and what would keep it moisturized. You want your hair to remain hydrated as it is the easiest way to fight off breakage.
Your hair is delicate and should be treated as such, so when you do detangle be sure you are doing it gently. This includes not detangling dry hair because this is the easiest way to cause breakage. So when you are detangling start at the ends and work your way up the hair shaft, comb through the hair slowly, in small sections, and be sure to use water or a detangler to dampen hair.
Use safe Heat
The first part of using safe heat is a heat protectant, it is imperative that when you are using any kind of heat you also incorporate a heat protectant. If one is not used, you are potentially exposing your hair to long-term damage and noticeable dryness. Being that heat automatically brings out dryness, heat protectant creates a barrier between the hair shaft and the hot tool preventing hair from being compromised. The second part of using safe heat is using a quality tool at the right temperature. You do not want the tool to be too hot because you will fry your hair and you don’t want it too low because then you will be passing through sections more than once which is just as bad as having the hot tool on a scorching temperature.
Sulfate Free Products
Sulfates even though they are excellent cleansing agents are too good at their job and will strip hair of the natural oils that your hair needs. There are plenty of sulfate-free shampoos that cleanse hair with no issue and leave it moisturized. Using products, that include sulfates will leave hair dried out and dry hair is more susceptible to breakage.
A sealant is a product that helps to seal in the moisture that is presented to the hair shaft. Sealants help with the detangling process, eliminate frizz and help to keep strands hydrated all of which combat breakage. This is most commonly referred to as the “O” in the L.O.C. method that acronym because it is applied after the liquid to lock in the moisture that was just presented to the hair. It is most common to use either oil or butter as a sealant.
Dry another way
It is common to dry hair with a towel but using a towel can cause damage in and of itself because the fibers the towel is made of can cause friction and potentially snag. Try using a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt because they are both a lot gentler on hair.
